Effects of the Russian, Chinese, and Iranian Revolutions on Women


Thesis: Women both helped and encouraged duringthe Russian, Chinese, and Iranian revolutions and were granted with a better role in life as well as a new sense of purpose.

Why did it Happen?

  • in 1979-basically used to demonstrate the power of Islam as a means of staving off secular foreign influences
  • mostly an anti-US cast
  • tried to put Islamists in power
  • rather than attempt for an economic transformation, wanted the maintenance and continuance of the Law of God
  • the social and political emancipation was only one of the many reasons behind the revolt

How did it affect women?

  • revolutionary activities created some limited opportunities for the development of egalitarian attitudes between males and females
  • both during and after the revolution, women marched along side the men against the Pahlavi regime
  • faced the bullets just as surely as the men did
  • for once, women finally understood their own significance, full potential
  • served to strengthen institution of family and the role of women in traditional forms

  • Why Did it happen?
  • Chinese Revolution (1911) : Overthrew the last Chinese Dynasty, Qing
  • The Manchu leaders were incompetent and frail
  • They were also corrupt
  • Poverty was a major problem and the government wasn’t helping
  • Who took over?
  • Capitalists and communist fought over who would control China
  • Eventually, the Communist Party won
  • Mao Zedong came into power
  • Before Revolution
  • During the Qing Dynasty, women had many restrictions
  • Couldn’t be out in public with men, Widows could not remarry
  • Foot binding was only available to the wealthy women
  • Education was restricted to gust genteel arts
  • After Revolution
  • The traditional robes were replaced with military styled clothes
  • Eventually women were wearing more western styled clothes
  • They could remarry and divorce

Really good job. The Chinese Revolution was layed out really well. The Iranian revolution was easy to read and got the point across. But, the Russian revolution was a little unorganized and hard to follow. Chris S.
